New Song: Retro-Ocity: 8bit Assault
We’ve advanced so far in game audio over the past 20 years that now we have full orchestral scores for games that are on par with that of Hollywood scores.
I find it kind of funny though that we haven’t really done anything unique since then. I mean, don’t get me wrong…there are some incredible game scores out there. I’m just a little down on the fact that every game that comes out these days feels that they absolutely need an orchestral score for their game. I’m not sure much thought really goes into this process though. I think the formula in most people’s minds are Hit Game X = Orchestral Score, therefore My Game X = Orchestral Score which = My Game X = Hit Game X. Or something.
Anyway, if you read my previous blog post you know that I’ve picked up a Roland MT-32 to relive the old days of gaming with one of the more sophisticated audio devices at the time. It is pretty sweet.
To go back even further though, I thought it’d be fun to try and write a song using only the power of the Nintendo Entertainment System’s sound chip. I think the results turned out pretty well. Hopefully I’ll do more of these retro tracks in the future.
